Simple Tips on How to Read the Bible

I’d suggest reading and rereading a passage or a book to get the gist of the message and the context. Familiarity with the text is vital. Another a good procedure is to read through the Bible once a year to continue to familiarize yourself with its total message. Another help is to have a study Bible such as The Ryrie Study Bible or NIV Study Bible or The Nelson Study Bible and read the notes as you read the text. All of these are excellent. I’d highly recommend the new NET Bible, which has extensive notes.
As you read the Bible, pay special attention to the context and the argument of the writer. Ask and answer questions like: Who is writing? To whom is he writing? Why is he writing? Is there a problem he is addressing? What is the purpose and theme of the book? You can ask this last question of every paragraph and chapter as well as for the whole book.
May I also suggest the following: The Joy of Discovery by Oletta Wald and especially, Living By the Book by Howard G. Hendricks and William D. Hendricks. Dr. Hendricks was one of my profs at Dallas Seminary and taught Bible study methods for years. This is his specialty and anything he writes is exceptional. In this book he discusses ten strategies for reading, things to observe and principles of interpretation and application. Both are super books. Try them.

The spirit of fear does not come from God but is a spiritual power which comes out of the spiritual realm and attacks our mind. There are many versions of the Holy Bible available now. Do you really know the History of the KJV Bible?
A resolution came forth in January 1604, when James VI of Scotland started the Hampton Court Conference. It said, ”That a translation be made of the whole Bible, as consonant as can be to the original Hebrew and Greek; and this to be set out and printed, without any marginal notes, and only to be used in all churches of England in time of divine service.”
Alexander Geddes (d. 1802), a Roman Catholic priest, who in 1792 issued the first volume of his own translation of the Bible, accordingly paid tribute to the Bible of his time:
“The highest eulogiums have been made on the translation of James the First, both by our own writers and by foreigners. And, indeed, if accuracy, fidelity, and the strictest attention to the letter of the text, be supposed to constitute the qualities of an excellent version, this of all versions, must, in general, be accounted the most excellent. Every sentence, every work, every syllable, every letter and point, seem to have been weighed with the nicest exactitude; and expressed, either in the text, or margin, with the greatest precision.”

History of NIV Bible – The New International Version project was started after a meeting in 1965 at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois between the Christian Reformed Church, National Association of Evangelicals, and a group of international scholars. The New York Bible Society (now Biblica) was selected to do the translation. The New Testament was released in 1973 and the full Bible in 1978. From the beginning, the NIV was met with great enthusiasm. By December of 1978 over 1,200,000 copies had been sold. Since then, the NIV has undergone numerous reprintings, and many different specialized editions have been released.

Sex, God And Marriage

Sex, God And Marriage
Discover the truth about Sex, God and Marriage.
In Sex, God, and Marriage we find a message needed today in every part of the world. To be pure, to remain pure, can only come at a price, the price of knowing God and of loving him enough to do his will. He will always give us the strength we need to keep purity as something beautiful for God.
Purity is the fruit of prayer. If families pray together they will remain in unity and purity, and love each other as God loves each one of them. A pure heart is the carrier of God’s love, and where there is love, there is unity, joy, and peace. – - – Foreword written by Mother Teresa

The Walk Of The Spirit, The Walk Of Power

The Walk Of The Spirit The Walk Of Power
The Walk of the Spirit — The Walk of Power
Vital Role of Praying in Tongues
I recommend this book by Dave Roberson if you are serious about wanting a closer or deeper relationship with God. The theology presented lines up with the Scriptures. This book explains the differences in praying in tongues for personal edification vs. the gift of tongues, etc. The gift of our prayer language is misunderstood. Most Christians do not realize the importance of utilizing what God has so freely given to those who ASK. Simply written, it is the truth of God’s Word unveiled for those who will believe God’s Word in spite of man’s teaching.
God conceived a wonderful plan for every one of us. In His plan, we were predestined to become His sons and daughters at the Cross. But one potential obstacle stands between us and God’s perfectly conceived purposes: Using the free will God has given us, we must choose to walk in the plan He has ordained for our lives.
God looks for a way to approach each of us in order to present His personal plan for our lives. He begins with the preaching of the Cross that encourages us to accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. If we accept Jesus, we take our first step into the plan God predestined for us before the foundations of the world. But if we reject Him, then like so many before us, we will live and die without ever taking that first step — salvation — into the divine purpose for our existence.

Waiting On God – Andrew Murray

Waiting On God by Andrew Murray
Waiting On God by Andrew Murray
31-Day Devotional
In all areas of their lives, Christians need more of God. Andrew Murray shares thirty-one heartfelt meditations to help renew your vision and quicken your desire to turn to God for His quiet, peaceful strength. Discover how God’s presence and love can refresh the weary heart that learns to wait on Him.
How often the ‘busyness’ of life can creep up and overwhelm us. Rather than depending upon our own strength, as Christians it is our privileged birthright to enter into a daily time of reverent meditation and silence, waiting only upon God for: His answers to our problems, His direction in our lives, and, most importantly, His awesome presence refreshing our spirits and teaching us more about Himself.
Andrew Murray shares thirty-one heartfelt meditations, one for each day of the month, to help renew our vision and quicken our desire to turn to the Lord for His quite, peaceful strength. Murray’s own prayer was that the Lord would use these meditations “to draw all to Himself, to learn in practice and experience the blessed art of waiting only upon God.”

Working For God

Working For God by Andrew Murray
Working For God by Andrew Murray
A sequel to Waiting on God
The aim of good works is that God is glorified, not man, Andrew Murray tells us in the beginning of this book. Waiting on God is part of the work process. This book Working For God is a sequel to Waiting on God. Goto Waiting on God PDF.
Offering oneself as an instrument through whom God can work is the chief objective of life, Murray writes. Work is the “highest form of existence” he adds, noting that we are defined by our work. We are what we do in a sense. In maintaining a Christian perspective, he places work in the context of love, noting that “The most Godlike thing is love.”
Fruitfulness is an outcome of work. Fruit is produced spontaneously. It isn’t forced. Murray presages Rick Warren in discussing how fulfilling one’s God-given role with talent and ability leads to a sense of satisfaction. He goes so far as to say “The works of a man not only reveal his life, they develop and exercise, they strengthen and perfect it. Good works are of the very essence of the Divine life in us.”
Murray sounds a theme found in Robert A. Schuller’s work when he talks about Divine work requiring Divine intervention. Dr. Schuller similarly talks about a God sized dream, one that cannot occur unless God is involved. Faith is a necessary part of such a dream becoming a reality. In the conclusion he returns to the opening comments about waiting on God. If one is to achieve what God designed him to achieve, it will have to be done God’s way. That can only come about as one waits on God.

Introduction

The object of this little book is first of all to remind all Christian workers of the greatness and the glory of the work in which God gives a share. It is nothing less than that work of bringing men back to their God, at which God finds His highest glory and blessedness. As we see that it is God’s own work we have to work out, that He works it through us, that in our doing it His glory rests on us and we glorify Him, we shall count it our joy to give ourselves to live only and wholly for it.
The aim of the book at the same time is to help those who complain, and perhaps do not even know to complain, that they are apparently labouring in vain, to find out what may be the cause of so much failure. God’s work must be done in God’s way, and in God’s power. It is spiritual work, to be done by spiritual men, in the power of the Spirit. The clearer our insight into, and the more complete our submission to, God’s laws of work, the surer and the richer will be our joy and our reward in it.

Along with this I have had in view the great number of Christians who practically take no real part in the service of their Lord. They have never understood that the chief characteristic of the Divine life in God and Christ is love and its work of blessing men. The Divine life in us can show itself in no other way. I have tried to show that it is God’s will that every believer without exception, whatever be his position in life, gives himself wholly to live and work for God. - Andrew Murray

Dark Night of The Soul

Dark Night of The Soul
Dark Night of The Soul by St. John of The Cross
This is  the sequel to Ascent of Mount Carmel by St. John of The Cross. St. John continues to describe the dark night in this sequel. Download the Dark Night of The Soul PDF for free from the above download link. The PDF has 96 pages.

Preface to Dark Night of The Soul

Somewhat reluctantly, out of respect for a venerable tradition, we publish the Dark Night as a separate treatise, though in reality it is a continuation of the Ascent of Mount Carmel and fulfils the undertakings given in it. And the second night, or purification, pertains to those who are already proficient, occurring at the time when God desires to bring them to the state of union with God. And this latter night is a more obscure and dark and terrible purgation.

Synopsis of Dark Night of The Soul

In his three earlier books he has written of the Active Night, of Sense and of Spirit; he now proposes to deal with the Passive Night, in the same order. He has already taught us how we are to deny and purify ourselves with the ordinary help of grace, in order to prepare our senses and faculties for union with God through love. He now proceeds to explain, with an arresting freshness, how these same senses and faculties are purged and purified by God with a view to the same end—that of union.
The combined description of the two nights completes the presentation of active and passive purgation, to which the Saint limits himself in these treatises, although the subject of the stanzas which he is glossing is a much wider one, comprising the whole of the mystical life and ending only with the Divine embraces of the soul transformed in God through love.
The Active Night has left the senses and faculties well prepared, though not completely prepared, for the reception of Divine influences and illuminations in greater abundance than before. The Saint here postulates a principle of dogmatic theology—that by himself, and with the ordinary aid of grace, man cannot attain to that degree of purgation which is essential to his transformation in God. He needs Divine aid more abundantly.
‘However greatly the soul itself labours,’ writes the Saint, ‘it cannot actively purify itself so as to be in the least degree prepared for the Divine union of perfection of love, if God takes not its hand and purges it not in that dark fire.’
The Passive Nights, in which it is God Who accomplishes the purgation, are based upon this incapacity. Souls ‘begin to enter’ this dark night when God draws them forth from the state of beginners—which is the state of those that meditate on the spiritual road—and begins to set them in the state of progressives—which is that of those who are already contemplatives—to the end that, after passing through it, they may arrive at the state of the perfect, which is that of the Divine union of the soul with God.

The Original Teachings of Jesus Christ

The Original Teachings of Jesus Christ
Are you aware of a book titled The Original Teachings of Jesus Christ by Vladimir Antonov? This book presents an analysis of the Teachings that were left to people by Jesus Christ in His Incarnation. The Teachings are systematized according to the main themes touched by Jesus.
Jesus is the greatest teacher the world has ever seen. He taught with such authority and simplicity. He used a lot of parables to make his teachings understandable by even the common man. He was put under pressure several times when he was asked controversial questions. But Jesus dealt them all with fitting, apt replies which had opened several eyes.
